Values vs Goals (ACT): Aim Your Next Step
“Let your light shine before others…” (Matthew 5:16)
In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), values are directions (like north on a compass); goals are mile‑markers. Values guide who you want to be. Goals are things you can finish.
Why It Helps
- When goals stall, values keep you moving.
- Values reduce all‑or‑nothing thinking (you can live them in tiny ways).
- They align daily choices with what matters most.
Quick Exercise (5 minutes)
- Pick 3 values for this season (e.g., faithfulness, kindness, wisdom).
- For one value, name a 24‑hour tiny step (e.g., text encouragement, 5‑minute prayer walk, read one Proverbs chapter).
- Calendar it. Treat it as an appointment with who you’re becoming.
Prayer
Lord, clarify what matters. Help me choose one small step that reflects Your heart today. Amen.
